Milan came from 2-0 down to pull off a desperate comeback in the 89th minute at San Siro, courtesy of efforts from Alvaro Morata and Noah Okafor, to put Torino at 2-2, but Paulo Fonseca still has a lot of work to do.
Just six minutes into the game, Milan had a great chance when Adam Masina flicked away Malick Thiaw’s header from a corner and Rafael Leao folded the rebound over the goal.
Zapata’s cross hit the far post and Bellanova’s header hit the inside of the far post and ricocheted over the line, only for Thiaw to accidentally pull it over as he tried to clear. Goal-line technology was not activated for a check, but VAR was.
Milan could have done better when Leao went on the attack from his own half after receiving a pass from Loftus-Cheek, but one-on-one the Portuguese star was blocked by Milinkovic-Savic.
When Bellanova broke free again and retreated down the right wing, he was set up by a feint from Duvan Zapata, but Maignan again had to save the Rossoneri under a corner when Ivan Ilic finished.
After the substitutions, Morata thought he had won a penalty moments after coming on, but the referee changed his mind after a VAR review showed that Coco had received the ball with a great tackle.
Moments later, Torino instead scored a double with a beautiful move. Valentin Lazaro completed a one-two with Ilic down the left wing, then crossed with his weaker foot to join Duvan Zapata’s free kick from five metres out.
Pulisic missed another chance with a shot from close range and it should have been 3-0 after a counter attack when Jan Karamoh fed the unmarked Che Adams with a pass wide.
Milan got the ball on target but Morata was ruled offside when he converted Reijnders’ rebound from the near post. However, they managed to score again in the 89th minute, when striker Morata parried Reijnders’ close-range shot into Milinkovic-Savic’s wrong foot to set up a thrilling finale.
It worked and Milan equalised with a combination of two substitutes just before the end of added time. Yunus Musah’s cross reached Noah Okafor from the right, who volleyed the ball into the goal relatively unfazed from nine metres.
