Giorgio Scalvini made a comeback as Atalanta defeated Parma 3-1 with goals from Mateo Retegui, Ederson, and Ademola Lookman to record their seventh straight Serie A victory.
Matteo Retegui broke the impasse for Atalanta and added to his total in less than four minutes, steering in the Raoul Bellanova cross from the right without even having to jump.
Ademola Lookman had it in the net again at the eighth minute, but the Mario Pasalic back-heel pass was offside. Ange-Yoan Bonny had twisted his marker to curl inches wide.
The goal gaped when the Retegui somehow soared over from an Ederson pull-back after Pasalic missed the tap-in and Retegui’s looping header flashed inches wide.
Lookman again missed a header from another Bellanova cross, but Matteo Ruggeri’s roll over the goal’s face from the left for Ederson’s tap-in at the back post gave Atalanta a two-goal.
Moments later, Zion Suzuki made a difficult stop on Lookman’s solo attempt before scurrying down to fingertip the Ruggeri’s angled drive past the far post.
On the stroke of halftime, Marco Carnesecchi was also called into action, bending down to block the unexpected long-range shot and the Bonny strike that he had set up.
After the restart, Parma did regain the lead when Cancellieri scooped with his back to goal and wriggled between Isak Hien and Rafael Toloi before crashing a fierce left-footed shot into the net’s roof.
Gian Piero Gasperini, the coach of Atalanta, was kicked from the touchline after receiving two yellow cards for dissent in less than a minute.
It cannot be deemed an intentional handball since Toloi got into a confusion and kicked a clearance against his own arm.
On minute 72, Lookman had the ball in the net, but it was offside once more, this time from a back-heel flick by Ederson.
With his position at the back post, the Nigerian international cushioned in Juan Cuadrado’s right-wing cross from point-blank range for the third time.
Even better news for Italy and Atalanta came when Giorgio Scalvini returned earlier than expected after surgery in June to repair a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.
