Raphael Varane’s impending signing with Serie A newbies Como ranks high among the summer’s most stunning football rumors.

The deal is done according to Fabrizio Romano, who made the assertion yesterday night.

The decision for Varane to play for Como was not unexpected. Cesc Fabregas and his team exerted a tremendous amount of effort to persuade the former Real Madrid superstar to continue playing in Italy. After his contract with Manchester United expired last month, the 31-year-old became a free agent and signed with the Italian club.

Although Varane’s three years at Old Trafford were lackluster, he is undeniably one of the top defenders of his time. A week ago, the Real Madrid star, who won the Champions League four times, verbally agreed to terms with Como. This megadeal wasn’t announced until the Italians had resolved other matters.

Como completed two additional acquisitions last week as they await Varane to sign a two-year contract at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia. The Serie A minnows added veteran left back Alberto Moreno and veteran goalkeeper Pepe Reina to their roster as free agents.

At the beginning of July, Como signed Gabriel Strefezza and Andrea Belotti, arguably kicking off the most thrilling transfer window in the club’s contemporary history. Perhaps the most important signing that Como has made this century is Varane’s imminent arrival.

Fabregas deserves a lot of the credit. In order to save Como from an immediate drop to Serie B, he convinced the Frenchman to join the club.
