After reaching Semi-finals in Euros, Denmark will have high hopes of title heading into the 2022 World Cup.
Prior to this winter’s match, Kasper Hjulmand’s Denmark were one of the most admired teams in international football after making it to the semifinals of Euro 2020. The Rod-Hvide travel to Qatar as outside chances of winning the championship because they have a wealth of tournament experience behind them.
Denmark confirmed squad for the World Cup
Goalkeepers: Kasper Schmeichel, Oliver Christensen, Frederik Ronnow
Defenders: Simon Kjaer, Andreas Christensen, Daniel Wass, Jens Stryger Larsen, Joakim Maehle, Joachim Andersen, Victor Nelsson, Rasmus Kristensen, Alexander Bah
Midfielders: Christian Eriksen, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Thomas Delaney, Mathias Jensen, Christian Norgaard
Forwards: Martin Braithwaite, Jonas Wind, Andreas Cornelius, Andreas Skov Olsen, Kasper Dolberg, Mikkel Damsgaard, Jesper Lindstrom, Robert Skov, Yussuf Poulsen
Hjulmand’s decision to select a preliminary 21-player squad was motivated in part by his desire to give injured players a chance to demonstrate their fitness. Yussuf Poulsen of RB Leipzig and Christian Norgaard of Brentford both had to do that and have since been included in the final squad.
Players to watch
Christian Eriksen
It’s a blessing that Christian Eriksen, who suffered a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, is returning to his peak form and travelling to Qatar. The playmaker, who had a strong start to 2022 with Brentford, has already established himself as a key player at Man Utd under Erik ten Hag.
Andreas Christensen
Andreas Christensen’s time at Barcelona has been sporadic due to injuries, but he is unquestionably the most crucial defender for Denmark and brings a wealth of experience in big games to the team.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg
In the past few years, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has developed into a true leader for his club and nation. Following a stellar start to the season with Spurs, he enters the World Cup in top form. The only worry Hjulmand might have is that he hasn’t had much of a break so far and might grow weary of the competition as it progresses.
Joakim Maehle
Joakim Maehle, one of the brightest lights of Denmark’s Euro 2020 campaign, hasn’t quite reached the same heights at the club level with Atalanta. He is still a star for the national team despite his work rate and output in the final third.
Denmark has had a rather inconsistent stretch in recent international matches after a strong start to 2022. As previously mentioned, they played France in the Nations League, defeating Les Bleus at home in their most recent competitive match. To put it mildly, their overall shape has been up and down.
The reputation of Denmark on the global stage over the next ten years will be determined by the results of this World Cup. We will be certain that they can be a force to upset the top teams over the following few years if they make another deep run. They ought to stir up some controversy in Qatar and have the power to surprise some of the big players, but in the end, others will simply outperform them in terms of quality.
