AC Milan reinforced their hold on second place in Serie A with a 2-1 victory over Fiorentina. Rafael Leao and Ruben Loftus-Cheek both scored goals, and the match ended in a 2-1 victory for AC Milan.
In the aftermath of Joe Barone’s untimely passing earlier this month, the hosts paid a heartfelt tribute to their late general manager Joe Barone before the match. However, this did not motivate them to produce a positive outcome against Rossoneri, who had won six consecutive matches across all competitions.
Loftus-Cheek scored the first goal for La Viola with a lovely back heel sent by Leao at the 47-minute mark. However, Alfred Duncan brought La Viola back into the game with a magnificent strike from a distance just a few moments later.
Following that, Leao scored another goal in the span of six frenetic minutes of the second half, putting Milan back in control of the game with a strong run and a cool finish.
There was a window of opportunity for Andrea Belotti to salvage a draw for Fiorentina, but she was unable to find a way to go past Mike Maignan.
Milan, who is currently in second position, has moved six points ahead of Juventus, who is currently in third place, but they are still 11 points behind Inter Milan, who takes the lead despite having played one more game.
Although they are now in tenth place, Fiorentina have a game in hand over their closest competitors for the remaining berths in Europe.
Milan will now play host to Lecce the following Saturday, preparatory to the first leg of their quarterfinal match against AS Roma in the UEFA Europa League, which will be played throughout Italy. On Wednesday, the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final between Fiorentina and Atalanta will take place at Fiorentina’s home stadium.
