Inter Milan’s hopes of winning the Serie A title were severely damaged as they lost to AS Roma 1-0 at home on Sunday.
Napoli have an opportunity to reduce the gap in the Serie A title race after Inter Milan’s recent woes continued with a 1-0 home loss to Roma. After losing to AC Milan in the Coppa Italia, this was Nerrazzuri’s third loss in a week. Simone Inzaghi’s team is under increasing strain as they prepare to play Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final.
David Frattesi’s goal was disallowed for offside, but Inter had shown promise early in the game. Matias Soule scored for Roma when Lorenzo Pellegrini’s deflected shot that created an opening. Shortly thereafter, Bryan Cristante’s attempt to score from Pellegrini’s cross nearly extended the lead for Claudio Ranieri’s team.
After halftime, Inter had trouble finding an equalizer. Nicolo Barella and Hakan Calhanoglu tried, but they were unable to turn opportunities into goals. Roma, meanwhile, persisted in posing a threat, with Artem Dovbyk and Niccolo Pissili nearly increasing their lead.
Due to their victory, Roma are now only two points off of the top four in eighth place in the rankings. Inter is still just one point clear of Napoli. As they get ready for impending obstacles both at home and in Europe, the result leaves Inter wondering what to do next. While under Ranieri’s leadership, Roma is still gaining ground.
