Teun Koopmeiners suffered a sickening injury in the opening minute of the Netherlands’ Nations League match against Poland after engaging in an aerial duel with Karol Linetty.
When Koopmeiners was eliminated just over a minute into Thursday night’s Nations League match between the Netherlands and Poland, there were terrifying scenes.
After an aerial duel with Karol Linetty, the Atalanta midfielder made an awkward landing and appeared to sustain a sickening injury. On the way down, Linetty appeared to unintentionally catch the Dutchman with an elbow to the back of the head.
And as medical personnel rushed to help the Dutchman, he was left out in the cold on the PGE Narodowy field. After receiving treatment, he was able to stand up again; however, he was carried off the field and replaced by Ajax player Steven Berghuis.
In both games against Wales, Koopmeiners played the full 90 minutes, but against Belgium or Poland, Thursday’s match marked the first time he received the start.
Cody Gakpo, a highly sought-after winger for the Dutch, gave his team the lead shortly after Koopmeiners left the field.
