Lazio’s incredible run of form in Italy and Europe continued when Mattia Zaccagni curled in a fantastic finish to give Monza the victory.
Daniel Maldini’s pull-back from the right and Dany Mota Carvalho’s pounce on a Mario Gila mistake in the first three minutes both soared over the bar.
Lazio also had a chance when Nuno Tavares’ cross-shot was fingertipped over the bar and Boulaye Dia stopped Pedro Pereira’s errant back pass, forcing a difficult one-handed save at the near post.
On 33 minutes, Mattia Zaccagni’s right-foot curler from the area’s edge, assisted by Nuno Tavares, rattled off the far post’s base, but it was really a practice shot for the goal a few seconds later.
In midfield, Pedro reclaimed it from Daniel Maldini, and Matteo Guendouzi set it up for Zaccagni to bend his right foot shot into the far bottom corner.
Monza retaliated with a bicycle kick from the acrobatic Dany Mota over the bar, and Stefano Turati’s gloves were stung by Nicolò Rovella’s strong half-volley from the area’s edge on a Lazio corner.
Nuno Tavares’ cross was just too short for Boulaye Dia’s leaping header, but Monza began to attack in the second half after Ivan Provedel stopped an Armando Izzo header and Dany Mota was blocked by desperate defending.
On the Dany Mota pull-back, Daniel Maldini likewise blasted over from 14 yards out, but Ivan Provedel was not much troubled by Monza’s pressure, and Gianluca Caprari’s last-second free kick into the wall was unsuccessful.
