The team celebrated Diego Maradona’s birthday and the club’s greatest player, who would have turned 62 on Sunday, on the day of Napoli’s most recent victory. In 1987 and 1990, Maradona, who passed away in 2020, guided Napoli to its only two Serie A championships.
The southern club now appears to be within reach of another title. The defending champion AC Milan, which will be visiting Torino on Sunday, is now six points behind Napoli in the standings.
At Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, Osimhen scored the game’s first goal four minutes in by deflecting a cross that Kvaratskhelia flicked on to the far post with two touches.
A quarter-hour later, Osimhen and Kvaratskhelia were engaged in combat once more when “Kvara” quickly pulled back a pass from the end line and passed it directly to Osimhen, who billiards-like fired it in from the edge of the six-yard box.
For Napoli’s third goal, Kvaratskhelia took things into his own hands by performing acrobatic control of a ball from Mário Rui over the top before quickly releasing an accurate shot.
After a few crucial stops from Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret, Osimhen added another goal in the second half by chipping the ball over the charging Consigli.
Osimhen, who was injured for five weeks of the season, is joint-top scorer in Serie A with Marko Arnautovic of Bologna with seven goals in eight games.
What a disappointment Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s absence from the World Cup in Qatar is for the majority of soccer fans.
Two among the most exciting young players in Europe this season have been the Napoli forwards. Osimhen is almost everyone’s equal in terms of goal-scoring threat when healthy, which isn’t often. While Kvaratskhelia is a dribbling prodigy who can score goals for others and himself and generally keep onlookers on the edge of their seats whenever he touches the ball.
As Serie A leader Napoli defeated Sassuolo 4-0, Osimhen notched a hat-trick and Kvaratskhelia scored one and assisted on two more goals to extend a club record with its 13th straight victory in all competitions.
Osimhen and Kvaratskhelia won’t be at the World Cup in three weeks because both of their countries—Nigeria for Osimhen and Georgia for Kvaratskhelia—did not make the cut.
While Georgia, which only began competing independently in the 1990s after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, has never qualified for soccer’s biggest event, Nigeria is missing its first World Cup since 2006.
After sweeping through its first five games of the Champions League group stage, including a 4-1 home victory over Liverpool, Napoli’s next match is a trip to Liverpool on Tuesday.
