Scott McTominay’s two goals helped Napoli defeat Torino with four games left, giving them a three-point lead in Scudetto race.
Napoli had the opportunity to seize control of the Scudetto race after Inter Milan’s 1-0 loss to Roma earlier on Sunday, and they did just that.
McTominay, a former midfielder for Manchester United, opened the scoring in the seventh minute to continue his incredible debut season in Naples.
McTominay sends the ball into the net from six yards out after reaching Frank Anguissa’s cut-back.
Four minutes before halftime, McTominay scored his 11th goal of the season, further escalating the fervor in the packed Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Like his first goal, McTominay reached Matteo Politano’s clipped cross and finished beyond Torino goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic because he was too strong and too aware for the visiting defense to stop him.
The 28-year-old has been voted player of the match in each of his previous three outings, scoring five goals.
Although Torino gained strength in the second half, Philip Billing’s header rebounded in off the crossbar to deny Antonio Conte’s team a third goal.
The only negative aspect of Napoli’s evening was the injuries sustained by defender Alessandro Buongiorno, who was named in the starting lineup after missing the previous two games due to a thigh issue, Anguissa, and Stanislav Lobotka.
After 34 games, Napoli leads the Serie A standings with 74 points, while Inter, who have lost their previous three games across all competitions without scoring, is in second place with 71.
In the event that both clubs finish the season with the same number of points, they will play a one-off match at the home of the side with the better goal differential to decide the winner.
