During the quarterfinals of the Europa League competition, Roma secured their place in the semi-finals of the competition by achieving a 3-1 aggregate victory over AC Milan.
Despite the fact that Milan is currently in second place in the Serie A standings and Roma is currently in fifth place, the home club started the second leg of the match with a 1-0 advantage. This was due to the former team’s outstanding performance at San Siro the previous week.
Zeki Celik’s dismissal in the first half of the game reduced the Daniele de Rossi-coached team to 10 men, but they were still able to complete the task in front of their own supporters and win by a score of 2-1.
Roma has never once been victorious in the Europa League, but they have finished in second place on two separate times. This includes the previous season, when Sevilla defeated Roma in the title game.
In the competition’s semi-finals, the team coached by De Rossi will face Bayer Leverkusen. Bayer Leverkusen, a Bundesliga team, will get past West Ham United to advance to the next round.
Gianluca Mancini, who had scored in the first leg of the competition, registered once again, with the center-back reaching the back of the net in the 12th minute from close range after a strike from Lorenzo Pellegrini had come off the woodwork. This was the opening chance of the event, and it was Gianluca Mancini who scored the first goal.
In the 20th minute, Milan nearly equalized when Ruben Loftus-Cheek hit the crossbar. However, Roma doubled their lead and took a 3-0 lead on aggregate in the 22nd minute thanks to Paulo Dybala. The Argentine finished off some excellent work by Romelu Lukaku and found the far corner with a great strike.
In the 31st minute, however, Milan was given a chance to save their game when Celik was shown a straight red card for a bad challenge on Rafael Leao, who was breaking clear down the left side of the field.
In the later moments of the half, the away team exerted a great deal of pressure, and the fact that they had a one-man advantage undoubtedly opened up more room for them. However, Roma continued to defend well, and Milan did not come close to regaining the lead.
A half-chance was presented to Milan by Christian Pulisic at the beginning of the second period; nevertheless, the United States international’s shot was consistently going beyond the crossbar of Roma.
Just before the hour, Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan had to make a good save to keep away a low shot from Leonardo Spinazzola. The hosts continued to pose a significant threat on the break despite Milan’s efforts.
As Milan continued to leave space at the back due to their eagerness to commit players forward, Tammy Abraham was the next man to try his luck for Roma. When he attempted to score from close range, the striker’s shot was blocked.
In the 85th minute, the away team had a chance to win the game when defender Matteo Gabbia headed a cross from Leao into the bottom corner. However, it was always going to be a matter of too little, too late for the away team to win.
During the stoppage time of the second half, Theo Hernandez was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Stephan El Shaarawy. However, the decision was reversed after a video assistant referee (VAR) review. Milan was able to keep all 11 players on the field, but they were eliminated from the competition as a result of a 3-1 record overall.
The focus of Milan’s attention will now shift to the marquee match that will take place on Monday against Inter Milan in Serie A. If Milan’s team were to suffer a defeat, their rivals would be able to secure the championship with five games remaining.
Roma, on the other hand, will also be playing on Monday for their home match against Bologna. The club coached by De Rossi will be trying to extend their unbeaten streak in the Italian top flight to eight games.
