Inter Milan prevailed over Salzburg 1-0 thanks to a late penalty kick scored by Lautaro Martinez, who came off the bench. As a result of the victory, I Nerazzurri advanced to the knockout stages of the Champions League for the third consecutive season.
The fact that RB Salzburg knew they needed a win in order to keep their UCL ambitions alive made this game difficult for them to play. The Austrian team, despite its youth, competed valiantly and possibly had the stronger first half. However, Inter seized control of the game in the second half and sealed the victory with a penalty kick from Lautaro in the 85th minute.
The beginning of the game was delayed since it appeared that both teams were sizing each other up. In the seventh minute, Sommer was quick to react and jump on a ball that was headed towards goal on a ricochet, and in the thirteenth minute, RB Salzburg took their first shot of the game. Inter finally received its first shot in the 33rd minute, and it was taken by Bisseck. In the preceding minute, Sommer knocked the ball away from a free kick that was being taken in the 29th minute.
In the final ten minutes of the first half, Inter showed signs of life and had two opportunities to score. The first opportunity came in the 35th minute when ‘alhanolu took a wonderful free kick that found Bastoni all by himself in the penalty area; however, Bastoni’s header flew high and wide of the goal.
The best opportunity of the first half for either team to score then presented itself in the 42nd minute of play. The ball was then given to Sanchez, who tapped it to Frattesi, who then blasted it into the air after receiving it from Thuram. RB Salzburg had a greater number of shots and possession when the halftime whistle blew, but neither team managed to score.
The first 15 minutes of the second half were quite similar to the first half. Both teams were a touch sloppy, and the shooting had supporters wondering if there would be any goals scored in the game at all. After then, Inter began to assert itself by maintaining possession of the ball and growing increasingly dangerous in the final third.
In the 73rd minute of the game, a corner kick appeared to be touched by three Inter players, but none of them were able to direct it toward the goal. In the 77th minute, Asllani fired a shot from the edge of the box that caused Schlager to make a double save, and then in the 82nd minute, Lautaro headed a beautiful Bastoni cross, but Schlager was there again to tip the ball against the crossbar.
Inter finally got their break in the 84th minute when an outstretched arm from Bidstrup prevented a shot from Barella from getting on goal. This gave Inter the opportunity to score. One minute later, Lautaro made good on the penalty kick to give Inter the win and ensure that the club would advance to the knockout stage of the UCL competition for this year.
