Roma players made two separate mistakes that resulted in two goals, handing Jose Mourinho’s team their first Serie A loss of the year.
Roma entered the match having allowed just one goal in four games, so their 4-0 defeat at Udinese was shocking.
The first two goals from Destiny Udogie and Lazar Samardzic were the fault of Roma defender Rick Karsdorp and goalkeeper Rui Patricio, and the final two goals from Roberto Pereyra and Sandi Lovric further humiliated the visitors on Sunday.
It was Udinese’s third straight victory, moving them up to fourth place and level on points with Roma. Udinese scored the opening goal with less than five minutes remaining as Mourinho’s team attempted to retake the top spot in Serie A.
Karsdorp attempted to head a cross toward his own goalkeeper at the back post after Pereyra floated one in from the right, but the striker was unaware that Udogie was standing just behind him and the teenager managed to sneak it in enemy goal..
When Patricio failed to stop Samardzic’s long-range shot, it squirmed out of his grasp and into the goal, giving Udinese a two-goal advantage. The capital team made a valiant effort to get back into the game, but two counterattacks ended up deciding the outcome.
Pereyra completed one in the 75th minute, and seven minutes later he served as the assist for Lovric’s first goal since joining the team in the offseason.
