Bayern Munich defeated Inter Milan 2-0 to finish the Champions League group stage with an undefeated record as Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting maintained his deadly form up front for the German powerhouses.
With a spectacular long-range goal in the second half, Choupo-Moting managed to score for the 6th game in a row to give Bayern a convincing victory in Munich.
Bayern now has six victories in six games in the group stage, which is the second consecutive season and third time in four years they have accomplished the feat.
Both coaches decided to rest multiple key players in what was basically a dead rubber match in Group C because Bayern had already clinched the group title and Inter was assured of second place before the game even started.
Even so, the opening minutes of the match were tense as both keepers faced challenges from stinging long-range shots from Joshua Kimmich and Nicolo Barella.
After Sadio Mane showed up to block a Barella shot with arms raised early on, Inter was miffed that they weren’t given a penalty.
Later in the first half, Bayern narrowly avoided another fortunate outcome when Lautaro Martinez deftly lifted a cross from Robin Gosens over the crossbar from a tight angle.
However, the home team gradually regained the initiative and scored a corner just after the halfway point to take a deserving lead.
Martinez once again made a bad impression when he slipped in the penalty area, allowing Benjamin Pavard to advance unimpeded and score the game’s first goal.
After the break, Choupo-Moting scored with a beautiful overhead kick, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
But the seasoned striker is still unstoppable, and on minute 73, he blasted Bayern’s second goal into the top corner with ease.
Bayern becomes the first team in the Champions League to win each of its group games in back-to-back seasons! The fact that this game was mostly unnecessary allowed the hosts to easily win and break a record. Inter put up a respectable fight, but they were unable to stop the Germans. It was over as soon as Choupo-Moting gave Bayern a 2-0 lead in the second half.
