Napoli succeeded in their goal at Anfield Road on Tuesday night, losing 0-2 to Liverpool while maintaining the top spot in Group A of the Champions League. The Reds needed to defeat the Partenopei by at least four goals, but they didn’t score until the very end of the contest.
In a game with few emotional high points, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah each scored for liverpool once at the 84-minute mark. Even though the Napoli coach lined up his best players at Anfield, Luciano Spalletti and his team were more concerned with protecting themselves and avoiding injuries.
Liverpool, on the other hand, didn’t even try that hard and appeared to realistically believe that beating Napoli by four goals was nearly impossible. Thiago Alcantara’s shot was stopped by Alex Meret to keep the score the same at the break, and Napoli’s best opportunity came when Kvhicha Kvaratskhelia found Leo Ostigard in the box and the Norwegian defender powered past Alisson Becker with a powerful header. Unfortunately, he was caught offside for the Partenopei.
Darwin Nunez’s header was saved by Meret, and Salah tapped the ball in to score Liverpool’s second goal just before the end of the game. However, Napoli’s top spot in the group never seemed in jeopardy.
Liverpool defeats Napoli 2-0 thanks to two goals in stoppage time. The visitors had a strong start to the second half and Ostigard appeared to have given them the lead with a header from a free-kick, but a four-minute VAR review disallowed it for a very slight offside. In the 85th minute, Salah conceded the goal by capitalising on Meret’s slip and tapping in from close range. Meret mishandled Van Dijk’s header once more in the final seconds of stoppage time, and Nunez helped it cross the goal line. The linesman raised his flag, but a VAR review revealed that he was in fact onside, so the goal stood.
