After another dominant performance against Ajax, in which Kvicha Kvaratskhelia converted it on style and Victor Osimhen scored on his comeback, Napoli has already secured a spot in the Champions League Round of 16.
Napoli won 6-1 in Amsterdam and were aware that they only required a point to guarantee their place in the Round of 16 here. After an extended absence, Victor Osimhen was back on the bench, and Amir Rrahmani wasn’t playing. Devyne Rensch, Mohammed Ihattaren, and suspended captain Dusan Tadic did not travel with the Dutch team.
With the help of Lozano and Piotr Zielinski, a delicate ball was chipped over the defense and found the Mexico international for a looping header with just under four minutes remaining in the game.
When Ajax attempted to respond, Alex Meret blocked shots from Bergwijn and Berghuis, respectively. Kvicha Kvaratskhelia also skinned three players in a row before Lozano volleyed over.
Moments later, Kvaratskhelia assisted Giacomo Raspadori in scoring the second goal by combining with Zielinski down the left side of the field. Raspadori then blasted the ball into the roof of the net after taking a touch from 12 yards out.
After the restart, Ajax did manage to get one back when Davy Klaassen headed Bassey’s cross from the left into the near top corner.
Osimhen returned from injury as Anguissa hobbled off, and Tanguy Ndombele’s shot was just wide.
Jurrien Timber blocked Ndombele’s volley with a trailing hand, and VAR called a foul that Kvaratskhelia fiercely converted into the top corner.
Lozano’s angled drive was stopped by a one-handed save, and Osimhen only managed to score after straying offside.
Instead, Ajax received a very light penalty because Brian Brobbey appeared to be leaning into Juan Jesus when they both fell to the ground. Bergwijn, however, made the conversion to give the Dutch team some solace.
Although Osimhen was most likely offside, his extraordinary miss from six yards on a low right-cross wasn’t excused.
After spending so much time on the treatment table, the Nigerian was obviously desperate to score. It paid off when he pressured Daley Blind into making a mistake and fired into the empty net. Osimhen’s celebrations were raucous, and he ran toward the crowd while removing his shirt and mask.
Napoli defeated Ajax 4-2 at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona to earn a spot in the Champions League’s round of 16. This was their fourth straight victory in Group A. Hirving Lozano and Gianluca Raspadori both scored outstanding goals to give the home team the lead early on. Ajax briefly regained control of the game thanks to Davy Klaassen, but Khvicha Kvaratskhella’s penalty ultimately seemed to seal the outcome. Steven Bergwijn’s successful conversion of the Dutch team’s own spot-kick to set up a tense conclusion To secure the three points for Napoli, Victor Osimhen eliminated the drama from the situation.
