Midtjylland humiliated Lazio 5-1 in Denmark, confirming both their appalling road record in the Europa League and their propensity for having total blackouts in some games.
The Biancocelesti wanted to build on their 4-2 win over Feyenoord, but due to the injuries to Mattia Zaccagni and Lazzari, they substituted Pedro and Radu while Milinkovic-Savic was rested. Pablo Ortiz and Brumado were both receiving medical attention when the Danes lost to Sturm Graz in their season opener and went on to win just two of their 14 competitive games.
Despite the fact that Elseid Hysaj’s pull-back attempt for Ciro Immobile was blocked, the home team scored almost immediately after.
After charging forward, Paulinho passed the ball to Gustav Isaksen, who cut inside Hysaj and fired a shot off the underside of the crossbar. The maneuver continued, Evander also had a charged-down attempt, but Paulinho turned in after being prompted three times. The goal’s validity was ultimately determined after a protracted VAR check.
After the game had just started again, Lazio were caught off guard when Anders Dreyer rolled across the box. As a result of Mario Gila’s amusing slip, Sory Kaba was able to sweep home from eight yards unimpeded.
With a spectacular save on Henrik Dalsgaard’s deflected header from a corner, Ivan Provedel stopped a third goal for the Aquile, who for the next ten minutes appeared to just stop playing.
As Matias Vecino’s assist was forced into a save by Pedro, Luis Alberto attempted to curl in from the corner flag but only managed to hit the near post.
When Midtjylland capitalized on that opportunity, they launched a counterattack, and Isaksen was brought down very easily after sensing Danilo Cataldi grab his sleeve, which gave Evander the opportunity to score from the penalty spot.
When Sergej Milinkovic-Savic came off the bench, he promptly scored, Jonas Lossl misjudging his shot from the edge of the box.
Isaksen, however, was given another penalty after Adam Marusic was called for a soft foul. Evander’s penalty kick was stopped by Provedel, but Isaksen was the first to react to the rebound. Once more, Lazio simply stopped attempting to play, allowing Erik Sviatchenko to volley in an Evander cross while being completely unmarked at the back post.
