Due to early goals from Boulaye Dia and Tonny Vilhena, Salernitana ended their terrible run of play with a 2-1 victory at the Stadio Via del Mare, but it was Lecce’s second straight loss.
Just 5 minutes had passed when Salernitana finally broke the scoreless tie. A defender had knocked Antonio Candreva’s shot back, but it only fell to Boualaye Dia, who slammed it the first time from just outside the box into the near bottom corner.
The goalkeeper had to run back and tip Junior Sambia’s cheeky lob attempt over the bar after he saw Wladimiro Falcone straying from his line.
Umtiti nodded a corner wide for Lecce, who failed to capitalise on a mistake by Lars Bohinen, but Salernitana were more effective following a midfield gaffe. The initial recipient of Dia’s through pass was Candreva, who moved out of the way to allow Tonny Vilhena to score from 12 yards.
The hosts did immediately regain control of the game after Pezzella pulled back from the left for Strefezza. While his initial touch wasn’t great, Strefezza made up for it with his determination to prod the ball past the advancing goalkeeper.
In the 32nd minute, Lorenzo Colombo’s effort was blocked by goal-line clearance, but Lecce still had a chance to tie the score. Alexis Blin’s shot was parried by Guillermo Ochoa, and Colombo missed the rebound.
After the break, Dia came close to scoring by accident when a Krzysztof Piatek shot bounced off his leg and into the goalpost, but it was most likely offside anyhow.
Federico Di Francesco’s free-kick header straight at Ochoa should have been better, and Candreva’s ferociously dipping long-range shot just cleared the crossbar. Salernitana held on for their first victory since October 30 beating Lecce 2-1.
