With a late goal by Eljif Elmas, Napoli got off to a winning start under Walter Mazzarri in his second stint as manager of the club, as they defeated Atalanta 2-1 in Serie A.
As a result of Napoli’s 2-1 victory over Atalanta in Serie A, Walter Mazzarri’s first game back on the bench resulted in three points for his team. As a result of the victory, Napoli is now in fourth place in the table, while Atalanta is in sixth place. Atalanta’s next match in Serie A will be away against Torino, while Mazzarri will face Real Madrid in the Champions League this coming week. After that, Atalanta will play Internazionale in the league the following weekend, who are currently leading the standings.
Mazzarri, who took over as the head coach of Partenopei earlier this month when Rudi Garcia was sacked, was under the impression that the defending champions had taken the lead in the 33rd minute, but Amir Rrahmani’s header was ruled out for offside.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s goal soon before halftime gave Napoli the lead as he redirected a cross from Giovanni Di Lorenzo into the net for the Italian club.
Atalanta came out strong after halftime and tied the game in the 53rd minute when Ademola Lookman redirected a Hans Hateboer cross into his own net. However, Atalanta’s attempt to take the lead through Mario Pasalic was thwarted by the offside flag as the home team attempted to complete the comeback.
Elmas was the one who sealed the victory for the Partenopei by finishing off a pass from Victor Osimhen, who had been set up by Marco Carnesecchi’s bad clearance. This allowed the Partenopei to move up to third position in the Serie A table, moving them ahead of Milan for the first time this season.
Midweek sees both teams return to their respective continental competitions. In the Champions League, Napoli will be playing away at Real Madrid, while Atalanta will be hosting Sporting Lisbon at home in the Europa League.
