Barcelona striker Depay’s move to Serie A side could collapse

Memphis Depay’s World Cup performance in Qatar was inconsistent.

The 28-year-old outscored Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to become the Netherlands’ second-highest international goalscorer of all time, trailing only Robin Van Persie, in the team’s 3-1 Round of 16 victory over the USMNT. However, he found it difficult to perform well under pressure and put on a very subpar performance in his team’s final match against Argentina.

After a protracted absence, Depay is now playing club football and must make significant decisions regarding his future. It is obvious that Xavi Hernandez does not care for the forward all that much, and a transfer would benefit everyone.

Due to ongoing negotiations between the player and club, AS Roma was considered to be in a strong position to sign Depay. However, according to Luis Rojo, the Dutchman’s relocation to Italy is challenging.

Due to their inability to meet the former Olympique Lyon captain’s financial demands, Roma is thinking about quitting the contest. This puts Barcelona in a difficult situation because Depay only wants to join a top team that competes in the UEFA Champions League, and Roma was the only interested party that fit both requirements.

The original intent of facilitating Depay’s departure would be defeated if Barcelona were to push for his departure and pay a portion of his wages for the upcoming season.

This season, Barcelona’s Dutch forward has only participated in two La Liga matches, scoring one goal in the process. Furthermore, he participated in the UEFA Champions League for only 15 minutes and is obviously under pressure to quit.
