Champions League | Milan 3-1 Dinamo Zagreb: Rossoneri secure top spot of the table with a win

After defeating Dinamo Zagreb 3-1 thanks to a penalty by Olivier Giroud, a goal by Alexis Saelemaekers, and a well-executed move by Tommaso Pobega, Milan now leads their Champions League group.

The Croatian team visited the Rossoneri in search of their first victory of the European campaign after their shocking victory over Chelsea. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Origi, Rebic, and Florenzi are all out due to injuries, and Vranckx, Yacine Adli, and Thiaw are not listed among those eligible for the Champions League.

Sandro Tonali’s nod went over the crossbar, as did Olivier Giroud’s attempt, and Moharrami dashed back to intercept Rafael Leao before he could get a clear shot on goal.

When Moharrami evaded Theo Hernandez at the near post, Mike Maignan made a save after Ismael Bennacer poked the opposite goalkeeper’s gloves from a distance.

Brahim Diaz and Alexis Saelemaekers both had shots blocked, while Giroud’s header went straight at the goalkeeper and Orsic’s curler flashed just wide.

On the cusp of halftime, Giroud coolly converted a penalty after Josip Sutalo caught the back of Rafael Leao’s heels in the box.

Milan doubled their lead after the restart, which took only 60 seconds. Leao sprinted down the left side and from seven yards out floated a cross in for the head of Saelemaekers under the bar. This season’s second Champions League goal for the Belgian in as many games.

Bruno Petkovic, a former striker in Serie A, was surrounded by defenders when he managed to thread a no-look pass across for Mislav Orsic to score a wonderful low goal into the bottom corner for Dinamo Zagreb.

Although Charles De Ketelaere was introduced as a center-forward, a position he has held at Club Brugge in the past, the subsequent goal was scored by a midfielder. Theo Hernandez and Tommaso Pobega executed a deft give-and-go as they prepared to sweep the finish in from 10 yards away off the underside of the bar.

Milan defeats Dinamo Zagreb 3-1 to earn their first victory in the Champions League this year. Leao was clipped by Sutalo just before halftime, and Milan were given a penalty. Giroud confidently converted it. The game took some time to get going. Saelemaekers doubled their lead with a thunderous header just two minutes into the second half to give them a quick lead. For Dinamo, Orsic recovered with a goal, but Pobega sealed the victory with a shot off the crossbar.
