Inter, who are currently in first place in Serie A, were held to a draw by Genoa, which allowed them to extend their lead at the top of the table to five points.
After Inter played Genoa to a 1-1 draw, they were unable to take advantage of the opportunity to open a seven-point lead over Juventus at the top of the Serie A standings. The visitors took the lead in the 42nd minute thanks to a goal scored by Marko Arnautovic, but Genoa immediately tied the game when Radu Dragusin scored an equalizer right before halftime. The result of the tie places the team coached by Simone Inzaghi five points ahead of Juventus in the standings before their match against Roma on Saturday.
Early on, Marcus Thuram headed the ball directly at Josep Martinez, but the game was stopped from the 15th minute until the 22nd minute because of the smoke from the pyrotechnics, which made it difficult to see the players.
Despite the fact that Carlos Augusto’s volley was deflected at the back post, Genoa had two significant opportunities to score. First, Marko Arnautovic deflected the attempt from Milan Badelj, and then Francesco Acerbi deflected a cross from Kevin Strootman, causing it to skim the far post with Yann Sommer beaten.
Inter took the lead in a manner that was quite chaotic. A long throw-in was flicked on for the Nicolò Barella chest and volley, which took a deflection on its way through and Martinez fingertipped onto the inside of the far post. However, Marko Arnautovic was the individual who reacted the quickest on the rebound. It was the first goal scored by the Austrian international while wearing the Inter shirt in Serie A. Because Genoa believed that Yann Bisseck had pushed Strootman during the buildup, they were in a state of rage.
On the stroke of halftime, Genoa equalized the score when Albert Gudmundsson floated a corner kick into the head of Rade Dragusin. The nod downwards went in despite Sommer getting his gloves to it. Carlos Augusto challenged Martinez with an angled drive, but Genoa equalized the score.
On the knockdown by Barella, Arnautovic blasted a half-volley wide, and Martinez came down to palm an Acerbi header off the line from the free kick that Hakan Calhanoglu had taken.
Sommer had a difficult time catching a header, but Dragusin was shown a red card for colliding with the goalie while he was attempting to catch the loose ball.
