With a 2-2 draw, Claudio Ranieri’s Cagliari threw a wrench into the works of the Scudetto. As a result, Inter must defeat Milan on Monday in order to claim the Scudetto.
Milan was kept to a 3-3 draw; therefore, if Inter had won tonight, a draw in the Derby della Madonnina would have been sufficient for them to celebrate their 20th Serie A title.
In the beginning of the match, Inter player Nicolò Barella put Simone Scuffet to the test with a fierce volley from a distance outside the box during a corner kick. Subsequently, Federico Dimarco volleyed across the face of the goal after receiving an assist from Alexis Sanchez.
Inter took the lead when Alexis Sanchez sprinted onto the pass from Matteo Darmian and drew back from the by-line for a straightforward tap-in from Thuram. That was a momentous occasion, as it established a new club record for the number of consecutive Serie A matches to which at least one goal was scored, which was forty.
Eldor Shomurodov scuffed the finish after a well-worked move, while Luvumbo failed to capitalize on a potential counterattack and curled another effort just beyond the far top corner. Also, Luvumbo failed to capitalize on a promising counterattack.
Barella had the ball in the net with a fantastic looping header into the far top corner while Dimarco was providing the assist; however, Barella had wandered offside during the assist.
Claudio Ranieri was dissatisfied with the performance of his midfield, and after only 28 minutes of play, he made a tactical adjustment by substituting Jakub Jankto.
It remained unexpectedly open, with Barella charging down the Shomurodov effort and Dimarco’s fantastic volley being finger-tipped over the bar by Scuffet. Both of these shots were considered to be quite impressive.
The snooker shot that was taken by Adam Obert was blocked by Sommer, and Scuffet blocked a free kick that was deflected by Hakan Calhanoglu.
Cagliari equalized the score after Luvumbo, who was facing away from the goal, knocked down a long Obert ball. This made it possible for Shomurodov to maneuver the finish between Alessandro Bastoni’s legs, and Sommer was unable to get enough on it to prevent the shot from going out wide.
Dimarco’s cross prompted Alexis Sanchez to attempt a header that narrowly missed the far post. However, Yerry Mina’s high and wide arm charged down Davide Frattesi’s header, which resulted in Inter being awarded a penalty that they were awarded. Despite the fact that Scuffet was able to get a glove on it, Specialist Calhanoglu hammered low into the near bottom corner.
However, it was not yet over, as Cagliari, who was in danger of being relegated, managed to get back on track despite the questionable circumstances. Gianluca Lapadula, probably with the assistance of his arm, was able to bring down a header that was placed over the top of the box. Nicolas Viola made effective use of his body to turn Francesco Acerbi and score an equalizer.
Lapadula went on the counterattack and crossed for the diving header that Viola sent to Sommer. Viola wanted more and drove the ball just wide of the near post, but deep into stoppages, Lapadula went on the offensive and attempted to score.
The leaders of Inter, who have escaped, will not experience any panic. Given that there are still six games left in the season, the draw indicates that a victory in their next game, which is an away match against AC Milan, who are their closest opponents and inter-city rivals, would be sufficient to award them the title.
