Noah Okafor scored the equalizer for Milan, which allowed them to come back from a 3-1 deficit and earn a 3-3 draw against Sassuolo. However, two goals scored by Samuel Chukwueze were disallowed due to millimetrical offsides.
To everyone’s surprise, the home team took the lead against Milan with their very first assault. Kristian Thorstvedt flicked on a cross from the right side, and Andrea Pinamonti volleyed it in from 14 yards out.
After a possible foul was committed on Yunus Musah just a few inches outside the penalty area, Theo Hernandez hammered a shot over the face of the goal, while Jeremy Toljan hobbled off the field with an injury.
Lauriente rushed on to the slide-rule ball that Thorstvedt had made, and Marco Sportiello only managed to parry it, which allowed the striker to turn in the rebound from point-blank range. This allowed Sassuolo to double their lead.
Subsequently, Samuel Chukwueze had the ball in the net, but he had slipped inches offside on the delayed Rafael Leao pass. Andrea Consigli made a significant save from point-blank range on Malick Thiaw’s header from a corner kick.
Milan did got one back moments later, when Leao slalomed between Ruan Tressoldi and Daniel Boloca, seemingly through a gap that wasn’t there, and twisted the low finish into the far bottom corner from a tough angle with his right foot.
Consigli needed to make a fantastic double stop on Alessandro Florenzi and Theo Hernandez scorchers at the near post. Volpato tested Sportiello from a distance, and the goalie was not thrilled with a terrible back-pass from Rafael Leao. However, Consigli was fortunate enough to save both of these shots.
Sassuolo added a third goal after Ruan Tressoldi robbed Yacine Adli. Gregoire Defrel’s slide-rule ball found Lauriente in a position where he had far too much time and space to shoot into the far bottom corner of the goal.
The pass that Lauriente made during the counterattack was utterly misplaced, despite the fact that he had multiple alternatives available to him. He really ought to have made it a hat trick. On the other hand, Milan promptly moved up the other end and scored when Leao’s cross was palmed into the path of Luka Jovic, who turned in from close range without being disturbed. This proved to be a costly development.
At the 63rd minute, Chukwueze had another opportunity to put the ball in the back of the net; however, the ball was once again taken away from him because of his shoulder. In this instance, he had gotten his hands on a ball that had been played over the top by Alessandro Florenzi and then shot it in from the inside of the far post from a difficult angle.
During an Adli pull-back from the by-line, Christian Pulisic took a shot from close range that was directed directly at Consigli. The resulting equalizer was the result of the siege which was successful. The corner kick was knocked on by Giroud and then by Matteo Gabbia, and it was volleyed in by Noah Okafor, who was a substitute, from six yards out.
As Milan continued to press forward, Giroud came dangerously close to turning the tide of the game by shooting over the crossbar while slipping after a deflected pull-back from Pulisic.
