Inter lost 3-1 to Lazio on Friday, dropping its first points of the new Serie A campaign.
After Inter forward Martinez had cancelled out Anderson’s opening goal, Pedro and Alberto came off the bench to score two goals in the final 15 minutes, making Maurizio Sarri’s substitutions crucial.
After two victories and a draw in the capital team’s first three games, the outcome put Lazio a point ahead of the Nerazzuri. Along with Roma and Napoli, Inter was one of only three Serie A teams with a perfect record after two games, but it knew it was about to face its toughest test yet against Simone Inzaghi’s former team.
It was played quickly and end to end in Rome. Milinkovic-Savic lifted a ball over the top five minutes before halftime, and Felipe Anderson sprinted in front of Inter defenders Dimarco and Bastoni to head the ball into the bottom left corner.
But six minutes after the break, Inter tied the score. Denzel Dumfries nodded a free kick back to Martinez after Lazio failed to block it, and Martinez narrowly avoided teammate Lukaku to score from close range. Moments later, Dumfries came close to giving Inter the lead, but Lazio goalkeeper Provedel brilliantly palmed his header away from close range.
Shortly after, Sarri made his substitutions, bringing on Pedro and Alberto in place of Zaccagni and Vecino. Milinkovic-Savic whipped in a cross from the right, and Pedro cut it back for Luis Alberto to shoot into top right corner from 20 yards out, proving their superiority.
Following a collision between Immobile and Inter defender Darmian in the penalty area, Pedro scored by leaping onto a loose ball and curling it into the top right corner to end the game with four minutes left to play.
