In a heated match against Lecce under the warm Puglian sun, Torino prevailed 2-0, placing them on the periphery of the European spots.
Torino maintained their momentum giving coach Ivan Juric some encouraging signs after they rebounded from their challenging 4-2 Derby della Mole loss to Juventus at the end of last month with a strong 1-0 victory over Bologna.
Lazio and Atalanta discovered this season that Lecce is ever-resilient and capable of producing upsets, but they were unable to match the visitors’ level of play, leaving them with nothing at the end of a tense 90-minute match.
Following a clever and well-executed free kick, Wilfried Singo gave Torino the lead after just 20 minutes by latching onto an Aleksey Miranchuk floated ball and putting the ball past Wladimiro Falcone, making it 1-0.
After a fantastic run from Nemanja Radonjic, Juric’s team kept up the pressure, and it only took a few minutes for the visitors to double their lead. This time, it was Antonio Sanabria who could not miss from a short distance.
Following a heated altercation between the players and coaching staff of the two clubs just after the 30-minute mark, referee Juan Luca Sacchi issued several bookings and red cards to the coaching staff of both clubs.
Lecce began to play better in the second half and made some attempts to tie the score, but Torino held firm and finished the game strong to secure the victory.
