In a heated Serie A derby on Saturday, Rafael Leao propelled AC Milan to a 3-2 victory over ferocious rival Inter Milan in front of the club’s new owners.
Leao contributed to all three Milan goals, scoring two and assisting Olivier Giroud on the other. In the 21st minute, Marcelo Brozovic gave Inter the lead, and Edin Dzeko equalized for the Nerazzurri in the 67th.
Serie A’s top team is now Milan. One of the six teams that has not lost is the reigning champion. On Wednesday, Milan announced the completion of its most recent ownership change, in which the New York Yankees acquired a minority stake and RedBird Capital Partners acquired a controlling interest. RedBird’s founder and managing partner, Gerry Cardinale, attended the Derby della Madonnina at San Siro.
When Lautaro Martinez backheeled the ball to Joaquin Correa, who then immediately sent a ball through to release Brozovic, Inter broke the scoreless draw in this matchup of Italy’s top clubs against the flow of play.
Every time former Milan player Hakan Calhanoglu touched the ball, the crowd booed, and it was much to their delight that a careless pass from him resulted in the equalizer seven minutes later. Leao scored after Sandro Tonali intercepted the ball and sprinted forward to sidefoot it across for him.
As Inter fought to leave its own half, it was all Milan. After a lovely one-two with Giroud, Tonali scuffed a shot right at Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic, and then Theo Hernández narrowly missed the target.
Giroud was set up by Leao in the 54th minute, and his flicked attempt bumbled past the helpless Handanovic. Six minutes later, Leao scored a stunning goal to double his total after eluding three Inter defenders and shooting from a tight angle into the bottom right corner.
Two of Inter coach Simone Inzaghi’s replacements made an immediate difference; Dzeko shot Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s cross in off the left post.
Milan defeated the group they defeated as champions at San Siro to win the Derby della Madonnina with deserved brilliance. The action never stopped after Inter’s first goal as the second city giants fought ferociously for pride and points. However, the Rossonert side of the city will be the one to celebrate, largely because of Leao and Maignan’s inspired performance and late heroics in holding the subpar Nerazzurri at bay.
