Victor Osimhen and Giovanni Di Lorenzo scored for Napoli in their 2-0 victory over Sassuolo in the home opener of their Serie A title defense.
Against Sassuolo, Napoli improved to 2-0 in Serie A play at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. Rudi Garcia, who replaced Luciano Spalletti as manager, is off to a strong start. Victor Osimhen scored the game’s first goal from the penalty spot, and Giovanni Di Lorenzo added another in the second half.
After Daniel Boloca, making his debut appearance in Serie A, carelessly brought down Matteo Politano, Osimhen calmly stepped up and converted the penalty.
Napoli had gotten off to a fast start, with Giacomo Raspadori hitting the post in the opening minute, but after scoring the game’s first goal, played in 30 degree heat, became stale.
When Maxime Lopez of Sassuolo was shown a red card for dissent in the second half, it made things much simpler for Napoli. Not long after, Sassuolo let up another cheap penalty, but this time Raspadori shot wide.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s entry bolstered Napoli’s chances, and his assist on Di Lorenzo’s game-winning goal at the end of a sharp counterattack proved decisive.
With two wins out of two, Napoli is now in second place, behind AC Milan only on goals scored.
Sassuolo are at the bottom of the table since they haven’t scored yet this season in Serie A and they don’t have Domenico Berardi because he’s been linked to a move elsewhere.
