Davide Nicola was re-hired by Salernitana on Wednesday, 48 hours after the Serie A club fired him.
Following the team’s 8-2 defeat at Atalanta on Sunday, Nicola was fired by Salernitana on Monday. However, the 49-year-old coach claimed that over the phone, he persuaded club president Danilo Iervolino to rehire him.
Salernitana lost at Atalanta, their fourth defeat in their previous five games, dropping them to 16th place in the Serie A standings, nine points above the relegation zone.
Nicola was hired as coach in February of last year as the team attempted to avoid being demoted from Serie A, and he was instrumental in turning things around. Salerno club had spent almost the entire season at the bottom of the standings after more than 20 years away from the top division. However, Salerno club scored 18 points in the final 15 games played under Nicola to stay in the division, earning him a new two-year contract in June.
