With a 2-1 victory over the Three Lions in the spectacular final that took place on Sunday in Berlin, Spain was able to win the record-breaking Euro 2024 championship.
In a first half that exemplified how much of a very monotonous competition has gone on, both teams virtually balanced each other out. Despite the fact that Spain had the most of the ball, they did not have the lethal penetration that they had been looking for.
Luis de la Fuente’s team, on the other hand, required only two minutes of the second half to break through an England defense that was suddenly at sixes and sevens. This was accomplished by a previously stunted Lamine Yamal, who set up fellow wing wizard Nico Williams to brutally strike home past Jordan Pickford without any hesitation.
The Chelsea talent, Cole Palmer, scored a goal for England in the 73rd minute with a silky finish from outside the box. However, fellow replacement Mikel Oyarzabal reacted with the moment that won the championship.
And despite England’s final throws of the dice, the Three Lions were left disheartened in yet another European Championship final as Spain were proclaimed kings of the continent for the fourth time. The Real Sociedad winger barely avoided the offside trap to tap in from a few yards away in the dying embers, and the Three Lions were left feeling disheartened when Spain won the championship for the fourth time.
In the single change that England made for the semi-final, Gareth Southgate made the hazardous decision to promote Luke Shaw to the starting lineup. This decision caused considerable anxiety regarding how well the aging hamstrings would hold up against Yamal.
Instead, the Manchester United player was unbeatable against the 17-year-old wonderkid. Shaw was running out of ideas to defeat him in the first half, and Williams ultimately came out to the other side to double up on the full-back. This was a role reversal in the truest sense of the word.
Yamal, on the other hand, was temporarily liberated from Shaw’s control in the second half, and he had a devastating effect by deftly allowing the ball to travel across his body and picking out the run of Williams. Williams could not have finished his shot with any more aplomb than he did.
Spain carved out chance after chance against a dejected England backline after Williams’s opening goal. This, in turn, forced Southgate to bite the bullet and make some early changes, including removing Harry Kane off the field shortly after the hour mark.
Cole Palmer, who had a telling role with the assist for Ollie Watkins’ semi-final victory and demonstrated his worth inside just a few minutes, stroked home a lovely equalizer from Jude Bellingham’s brilliant ball, was also sacrificed for Kobbie Mainoo. He had a stunning impact on the game.
On the other hand, Palmer had merely stirred the Spanish bear, as De la Fuente’s team swiftly restored order and brought on an aggressive substitution of their own in the form of Oyarzabal. It was Oyarzabal who would come up with the momentous moment that would win Spain their fourth European Championship championship.
The goal was scored by Oyarzabal, who got goal-side of Guehi, just about managed to evade the offside trap, and could not miss from a few yards out, engraving Spain’s name onto the Euro trophy once again. Marc Cucurella was given much too much room down the left to choose his ball, despite the fact that Kyle Walker was applying pressure.
