Uefa Europa League | Roma 1-2 Real Betis : Giallorossi failed to win at Olimpico

Real Betis came from behind to defeat Roma 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico after Roma had taken the lead through a penalty from Paulo Dybala.

After beating HJK and losing to Ludogorets, the Giallorossi needed a win to take the group lead. Betis entered the match with an undefeated record. Due to the injuries to Lorenzo Pellegrini, Rick Karsdorp, and Georginio Wijnaldum, Tammy Abraham was reinstated to the starting XI. The Spaniards were without Juanmi but did have Joaquin, German Pezzella, and Luiz Felipe.

Due to a knee injury, Zeki Celik had to leave the game after just five minutes; Leonardo Spinazzola took his place. Sergio Canales’ shot was parried by Rui Patricio before Nabil Fekir struck the near post’s base from the edge of the box. However, Fekir was forced to leave the game due to a muscular injury, forcing Betis to make a last-minute substitution as well.

After the VAR on-field review, a Roma corner skimmed Roger Ibanez’s head, and Aitor Ruibal had his arm raised and extended to charge it down for an inevitable penalty. Claudio Bravo was sent the wrong way by Paulo Dybala and Roma took the lead.

After catching Ibanez off guard, Luiz Henrique saw his shot blocked, but Guido Rodriguez did manage to tie the score with a fierce daisy-cutter from distance that trickled into the near bottom corner.

Following Zaniolo’s close-range strike against the underside of the bar in response to a cross from the right, Bravo launched himself into the air to block a volley from Dybala.

After the restart, on a chaotic corner, Bryan Cristante was denied by a huge save, and Zaniolo had a shot at the near bottom corner blocked.

After a challenging first half, Roma improved as Bravo stopped a dangerous Zalewski roll across from the right with his fingertips.

However, Betis scored on their first opportunity in a while when Rodri’s cross found Luiz Henrique at the back post, towering over Spinazzola to send a looping header over Rui Patricio. The situation worsened for Roma when Zaniolo lost his cool and was dismissed for a truly stupid kick off the ball.
