Simone Verdi’s opening goal was cancelled out by Stefano Sensi, but Monza will be disappointed to only draw with Verona after a goal was narrowly disallowed and they missed good opportunities.
After the scoreless draw with Spezia, Verona was still in the bottom three and played without Kevin Lasagna, Isak Hien, Veloso, Hrustic, Djuric, Sulemana, Ceccherini, Henry, and Ngonge. With the absence of Rovella, Marlon, and Dany Mota Carvalho, Monza wasn’t doing much better, but Filippo Ranocchia was back in the lineup.
Patrick Ciurria fired a long-range shot straight at Lorenzo Montip, Matteo Pessina fired over, Michele Di Gregorio gloved a cross-shot from Yayah Kallon, and Andrea Petagna nodded a corner off-target.
As Ondrej Duda’s shot was charged down and rebounded into the path of Simone Verdi, who blasted into the roof of the net from 12 yards, Verona took the lead.
Adolfo Gaich had a chance to make it 2-0 but mishandled the shot into Di Gregorio’s arms. This costly error cost them the match, as Monza quickly equalised. Carlos August pulled back from the by-line in a good right to left passing play, allowing Stefano Sensi to tap in from six yards away.
On the hour mark, Gianluca Caprari had the ball in the net to give Monza a 2-1 lead, but it was ruled that Petagna was millimetres offside in the buildup. In the face of his former club, Caprari refrained from celebrating.
Petagna nearly scored on the Carlos August knock-down, but Diego Coppola made a last-ditch block to stop him. Pessina, who had just dribbled past a defender to put Monza ahead, had a golden opportunity to seal the victory in the final minute, but instead he shot high.
