Despite their desire, Atalanta were unable to score three points in this afternoon’s tense match against the recently promoted Cremonese.
Atalanta was eager to keep up their momentum after an incredible start to the season when they entered this match weekend atop the Serie A table, but things did not go according to plan at the Gewiss Stadium today. In the first half, neither team was able to make a breakthrough, but in the enthralling second half, fireworks were exchanged.
After 63 minutes, Koopmeiners appeared to give the home team the lead with an unlikely free-kick, but a quick VAR review determined it was offside because of a handball by Caleb Okoli. La Dea persisted in their efforts, and 11 minutes later they were rewarded with their first goal thanks to Merih Demiral, whose header directed Koopmeiners’ free kick into the goal.
After a few promising minutes for Gian Piero Gasperini’s team, Juan Musso mishandled a shot from Santiago Ascacibar, allowing Emanuele Valeri to swoop in and score the equalizer.
In front of their home crowd, Atalanta made every effort to regain the upper hand, but the Cremonese defended well to earn their tenacious point.
