Inter was able to maintain their position as the top team in the Serie A standings thanks to an own goal scored by Federico Gatti, which proved to be the deciding factor in the game and ultimately separated the two teams.

As Inter defeated Juventus in the Derby d’Italia on Sunday night, they dealt a devastating blow to Juventus’ chances of winning the Scudetto. Inter’s victory was well-deserved. Inter was able to legitimately take the lead because they were on the offensive end of the field for the majority of the game, while Max Allegri’s team practically never managed to put Yann Sommer to the test.

This was despite the fact that the only thing that separated the two teams was an own goal scored by Federico Gatti. As a result, the Nerazzurri have strengthened their lead in the table over the Old Lady to four points, and they still have one game in their possession. It is possible that they will have a seven-point advantage over the Bianconeri if they are successful in their catch-up game on February 28 against Atalanta.

Inter were in command of the situation from the very beginning, and Federico Dimarco was the first player to pose a threat to the Bianconeri’s goal. However, his effort, which was a response to a cross from Benjamin Pavard, struck the side netting.

After that, Hakan Calhanoglu made a superb selection of the former Verona player by sending a long-range pass all over the pitch. This provided Dimarco with the opportunity to serve Marcus Thuram in the middle of the box. A fantastic slide tackle by Gleison Bremer, prevented the Frenchman from taking a shot.

The strategy that Juventus appeared to be employing was to simply defend until the very end and then attack the Nerazzurri on the counterattack. When Weston McKennie ran from the midfield line towards the box, it appeared as though that strategy was successful. Afterwards, he served Vlahovic on the left side of the court; however, the Serbian striker failed to maintain the pace of the game, which allowed Pavard to block his effort.

The result of the Derby d’Italia was determined approximately 37 minutes into the match. Pavard attempted to do an acrobatic scissor kick after Nicoló Barella crossed the ball from the right side of the box into the middle of the box. As the Juve defender attempted to anticipate Thuram’s header, he only managed to gently touch the ball, which caused it to bounce on Gatti’s chest and into the back of the net. It was appropriate for the score to be 1-0 during the halftime break.

Inter continued to push after the restart, but they were met with Szczesny on their path. The pattern did not change. Barella volleyed the ball after receiving a service from Dimarco, the Polish goalkeeper blocked Barella’s strike from point-blank range. Additionally, the Polish goalkeeper blocked the shooting of substitute Marko Arnautovic.

It was also Calhanoglu’s responsibility to write his name on the scoresheet; however, his lob shot from the edge of the box ended up colliding with Szczesny’s right post that prevented him from doing so. Juventus’ solitary shot in the second half came from Vlahovic, but it was a weak effort that Sommer easily blocked. Inter’s dominance was obvious, and the only shot that Juventus had in the second half was from Vlahovic.
