Milan 1-2 Atalanta: La Dea wins the place in semifinals

Teun Koopmeiners scored twice at San Siro to defeat Milan after Rafael Leao’s first goal. As a result, Atalanta will play Fiorentina in the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia. These two teams will meet one other.

In the Serie A match that took place a month ago, Luis Muriel’s back-heel flip in the last seconds of the game won it for Atalanta in Bergamo by a score of 3-2.

A counterattack by Christian Pulisic resulted in a drive by Yunus Musah that was deflected over the bar by Marco Carnesecchi. Emil Holm’s volley from a cross by De Ketelaere was also off target.

Marten de Roon and Gabbia both came racing in at the back post and collided heavily with each other after De Ketelaere batted away a cross that was being played. Even though it appeared as though Tijjani Reijnders had pushed De Roon in the back, the video assistant referee decided that the incident was an accident and did not propose a review of the penalty. The fact that Gabbia and De Roon had to be replaced was a consequence of the harm that was done to both teams.

After Berat Djimsiti made a remarkable sliding tackle to stop Rafael Leao in the box, Milan broke the deadlock with a classic move. Theo Hernandez and Rafael Leao sprinted down the left side of the field, exchanging a series of passes until the Portugal international steered it into the far bottom corner with the inside of his right boot. Milan’s goal broke the deadlock.

With another goal that was well-worked, Atalanta was able to bring the score back to even less than a minute later. Teun Koopmeiners passed the ball into the net from just inside the penalty area after Holm had pulled back from the right side of the field at the right time.

Mario Pasalic, who had come on as a replacement, believed that he had put Atalanta ahead of the game, but Davide Calabria, who had thrown himself in the way of the finish, prevented him from doing so.

In the beginning of the second half, there was a similar level of urgency with Mike Maignan getting down to palm a Koopmeiners strike from the edge of the box off the line. Then, on the counterattack from the corner that resulted, Leao over-hit the ball so that Calabria was able to score.

There was additional controversy when Atalanta was awarded a penalty. Alex Jimenez appeared to toe-poke the ball away from Aleksei Miranchuk before their knees met, but the video assistant referee did not overrule the referee’s decision. When Koopmeiners wanted Maignan to finish his brace, he sent him in the incorrect direction.

The first time that Filippo Terracciano played for Milan, Miranchuk’s left-foot curler went just wide, and Yunus Musah deflected Ederson’s shot beyond the far post. Terracciano made his debut for Milan.

After that, Theo Hernandez ballooned over from a Leao pull-back, and the deflected Musah effort was palmed away as the home team pushed forward in the last minutes of the match. Carnesecchi also got down brilliantly to fingertip the Christian Pulisic snapshot that came out of the near bottom corner.

Although there were requests for a penalty on the final corner of the game for a probable handball committed by Holm, it was determined that his arm was in a position that was regarded to be perfectly natural.
