SERIE A | NAPOLI 1-1 LECCE: COLOMBO’S ROCKET HELD NAPOLI AT DRAW

Last Updated on 01/09/2022 by

Lorenzo Colombo’s penalty attempt was saved, but he still scored to tie the score as recently promoted Lecce unexpectedly held Napoli to a 1-1 draw.

For Napoli, which had started the season with two convincing victories, it was their second consecutive draw. After Tanguy Ndombele fouled Federico Di Francesco in the 25th minute, Lecce, the Serie B champions, nearly unexpectedly took the lead.

Colombo successfully converted the penalty kick, but because the referee hadn’t yet blown his whistle, it had to be retaken. Alex Meret, the Napoli goalkeeper, stopped the second attempt.

Eljif Elmas scored the first goal for Napoli shortly after, but Colombo leveled the game for Lecce six minutes later with a rocket from more than 20 yards out into the top right corner.

If Napoli had defeated their promoted opponents at the Stadio Maradona, they would have shared the lead after four games.

However, the draw places Lecce in 15th place after they earned their second point of the season, while Luciano Spalletti’s team now sits third, two points behind Roma and one back of Inter Milan in second place.
