The new signing, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, might make Napoli forget about those players who left during the off season.
In Napoli’s opening Serie A game against Hellas Verona, Kvaratskhelia contributed a goal and an assist to the team’s 5-2 victory. The Milan teams won on Saturday, and Roma won on Sunday, meaning that all of the teams that are likely to contend for the title have won their opening games.
Although Napoli came in third last year, there were concerns about its performance this year after losing several important players, including skipper Lorenzo Insigne, all-time top scorer Dries Mertens, and defender Kalidou Koulibaly. Although it had an early lead in Verona, the home team got the initiative in the 29th minute.
Martin Hongla’s attempt was deflected over the bar by Alex Meret, but Kevin Lasagna volleyed in the corner that followed after it was nodded onto far post. In the 34th minute, André Anguissa came close to tying the score, but his header hit the left post. But three minutes later, Kvaratskhelia’s header of a cross from Hirving Lozano gave Napoli the equalizer. Victor Osimhen headed on a corner for a similar goal to Verona’s first goal, and the comeback was complete just before halftime when he volleyed in towards the far post.
Almost instantly after the break, Thomas Henry scored the equalizer for Verona, but after that, it was all Napoli. In the 55th minute, the visitors regained the lead when Piotr Zieliski scored into the bottom right corner after Kvaratskhelia touched down a through ball. Matteo Politano, who came on as a substitute, and Stanislav Lobotka completed the scoring, while Adam Ounas also had a goal for Napoli disallowed shortly after entering the game.
