On Sunday, Napoli defeated Roma 2-1 at home to move a step closer to snapping their 33-year Serie A title drought thanks to two outstanding goals from Victor Osimhen and Giovanni Simeone.

With 53 points from 20 games, Napoli is the only team in first place, 13 points ahead of Inter Milan in second. Roma has 37 points and is in sixth place.

After 12 minutes, Napoli’s Kim Min-Jae came dangerously close to an own goal when he misjudged goalkeeper Alex Meret’s position and headed the ball merely to the right of the free goal.

After 17 minutes, Osimhen, the top scorer in Serie A, gave Napoli the lead when he chested down a cross inside the box and volleyed the ball into the goal.

Bryan Cristante’s header following a corner forced Meret to make a full-stretch save in the 61st minute. Three minutes later, a Napoli counterattack resulted in a shot that Roma goalkeeper Rui Patricio saved.

In the 75th minute, Roma equalised when substitute Stephan El Shaarawy got away from his defender and tipped in a cross at a sharp angle.

Simone received the ball at the edge of the box four minutes before stoppage time, turned, and buried the ball into the upper right corner, whipping the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium crowd into a frenzy.
