Jose Mourinho heaved a sigh of relief as his Roma team won their first game of the season with a resounding 7–0 victory over Empoli.

This victory was Roma’s first of the year. Romelu Lukaku scored his first goal for the club during the rout of Empoli, while Paulo Dybala and Bryan Cristante wowed with spectacular goals of their own. Both Fiorentina and Frosinone extended their impressive starts to their Serie A careers with victories against their respective opponents.

The fact that Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma team had not yet won any of their first three games in the Serie A raised some fears about the return of the third-season syndrome.

Despite this, his team had a field day against an Empoli team that had been struggling recently, scoring seven goals to earn their first three points of the season after suffering back-to-back losses.

Paulo Dybala came to Mourinho’s aid and scored twice in a 7-0 mauling, as a Bryan Cristante thunderbolt and Romelu Lukaku’s first goal for the club helped send Empoli their fourth consecutive loss. Romelu Lukaku bagged his first goal for Roma.

They took the lead thanks to a spectacular penalty kick by Dybala in the second minute, and then Renato Sanches’s unstoppable header placed them in the driver’s seat six minutes later.

Bartosz Bereszynski and Alberto Grassi of Empoli were involved in a head-to-head collision that ended to Grassi putting the ball into his own net as Roma rounded off a perfect first half. The incident occurred when the defensive duo of Empoli collided with one another.

Then, Dybala produced a moment of true magic as he sidestepped two defenders before slipping the ball past Etrit Berisha for goal number four and the Argentine’s second goal in as many games during this campaign.

Then came Lukaku’s moment, as he stroked the ball home under the onrushing Berisha in what was his last contribution of the game. Cristante’s goal was a strong contender for goal of the game, as it came from a distance of 25 yards and thundered into the roof of the net. Dybala’s goal was also a strong contender for goal of the game.

Gianluca Mancini’s seventh goal, which sealed the deal for the win, allowed Jose Mourinho to breathe a sigh of relief before Tuesday’s UEFA Europa League match against FC Sheriff.
