Inter were able to increase their lead at the top of Serie A to seven points after coming from behind to defeat Roma 4-2 in a nail-biting match. This victory also brought an end to Daniele De Rossi’s flawless start in the capital city.
After a rainy match at Stadio Olimpico, Inter defeated AS Roma by a score of 4-2 to take a seven-point lead at the top of the Serie A standings. There was a 2-1 lead for Roma, but an own goal scored by Angelino gave the Nerrazzuri a 3-2 advantage as the clock ticked closer and closer to the end of the match. With a fourth goal in the final minute of stoppage time, Bastoni put the finishing touches on the victory for the Nerazzurri. As a result of the victory, Inter has moved seven points deeper into the lead in the standings.
Last month, De Rossi took over as manager of Giallorossi, succeeding Jose Mourinho on a contract that lasted until the end of the season. He won his first three games in charge of the club, but he faced a formidable challenge against Inter, which had not suffered a loss in Serie A since September.
In the midst of a torrential downpour in the capital, Francesco Acerbi headed the visitors into the lead after 17 minutes. However, Roma came back with a fantastic comeback, as Gianluca Mancini nodded in a free-kick, and Stephan El Shaarawy cannoned a finish that hit both posts and in to put them up on the verge of halftime.
In the second half, a resolute Nerazzurri team came out with a vengeance, and it took them four minutes to equalize the score. Marcus Thuram scored the equalizer by tucking in a cross, and six minutes later, the striker’s pressure caused Angelino to make an own goal.
Romelu Lukaku had a huge opportunity to score when he was one-on-one with Yann Sommer, but the goalkeeper managed to pin the ball off his toes. Benjamin Pavard’s stunning volley came close to hitting the post, and Lukaku’s shot was blocked by Sommer.
Inter’s league-best defense held on and caught the high-pressing visitors on the counter as Bastoni finished off a three-versus-one breakaway. This was accomplished despite the fact that the home team applied a late rush of pressure.
