Serie A club Salernitana has fired manager Davide Nicola a second time in a month.
Nicola, who joined the team in February 2022, was fired on January 15 following an 8-2 defeat to Atalanta. Just two days after being fired, Nicola was, in an unprecedented sequence of events, rehired as manager.
Since his reappointment, Salernitana have played one win and three losses in Serie A, including a loss to Hellas Verona on Monday.
After that defeat, Nicola was fired, leaving his former team 16th in the Italian top division with 16 games remaining in the season, 4 points and 2 places above the relegation battle.
The 49-year-old, whose former teams include Torino, Genoa, and Bari, departs the Stadio Arechi having won nine out of his 38 matches in charge. His second stint lasted just 29 days.
This time Salernitana didn’t have any second thoughts on their decision as Paulo Sousa has been selected by the club to take Davide Nicola’s place on the bench.
Salernitana and Paulo Sousa have reached an agreement on a five-month contract with two additional years in options. Both parties have exit clauses in case things don’t work out. After five years of leading teams all over the world, the manager is returning to Serie A.
