Sampdoria defeated Hellas Verona 3-1 at Marassi thanks to a pair of goals from Manolo Gabbiadini, giving the Blucerchiati their first victory at home this year.
At minute 23, Bruno Amione headed against the woodwork, but Gabbiadini’s opening goal was just moments away as the Italian striker scored from another corner kick shortly after. Gabbiadini was quick to score with his left foot from the edge of the penalty box after Lorenzo Magnani of Verona lost an aerial duel but chose to stay on the ground and protest to the referee rather than chase after the ball.
At minute 35, he scored his second goal with a magnificent long-range effort into the top right corner, giving Sampdoria a two-goal lead going into halftime.
Adolfo Gaich scored for the Gialloblu early in the second half, but the goal was quickly overturned by VAR for offside. Just two minutes later, the ex-Benevento striker once again had a goal disallowed for offside.
Although Davide Faraoni’s goal in minute 88 stood, Hellas was too late. The referee gave the all-clear after a second VAR check for a possible handball after the Italian defender scored with his chest from close range.
Zanoli completed a dangerous counterattack started by former Real Madrid forward Jese, who provided the right-back with a flawless assist. Alessandro Zanoli put an end to the match by scoring the third for Sampdoria in front of Lorenzo Montip.
Sampdoria has distanced itself from the danger zone by nine points from Spezia and four points from Hellas.
