Tuesday night, Inter defeated ten-man Viktoria Plzen 2-0 thanks to goals from Edin Dzeko and Dumfries.
After Pavel Bucha was dismissed for a careless challenge on Nicolo Barella, Dumfries doubled their lead. Dzeko had scored the game’s opening goal in the first half.
After completely dominating the opening exchanges, Inter opened the scoring through Edin Dzeko in the 20th minute. Joaquin Correa made a deft pass to find the seasoned striker, who calmly sidefooted the ball into the bottom corner from the left of the penalty.
The visitors were able to maintain control of the game without exerting too much effort for the remainder of the first half. This was partially because of Inter’s superiority in the middle of the field and partially because Viktoria Plzen lacked the necessary skill on the ball to produce anything in the final third.
Near the end of the first half, Jindrich Stanek made a fine save to stop Dzeko’s drilled effort from the right of the penalty area and prevent him from scoring his second goal of the game.
When Dzeko headed an Alessandro Bastoni free kick goalward at the beginning of the second half, Stanek was once more called upon to make a save.
Following that, Inter really stepped it up and pushed for a game-ending second goal. When Bastoni looped the ball to Denzel Dumfries in the six-yard box in the 51st minute, they ought to have won it. However, his subsequent free header on goal soared over the crossbar.
On the hour mark, Pavel Bucha was given a straight red card after a VAR review, ending any slight hopes of a Plzen comeback. The Italian international was badly injured after the 24-year-old lunged horribly into a 50-50 with Nicolo Barella and caught him high on the shin.
The visitors finally doubled their advantage in the 70th minute. Dumfries scored the goal after Dzeko set him up by putting him in scoring position, putting the ball past Stanek and into the goal. With a doubleheader against Barcelona coming up soon, the victory is crucial for Inter in Group C.
