Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma received boos from the crowd before Italy’s Euro qualifying match against Ukraine on Tuesday night, but Guglielmo Vicario has come out in support of his teammate.
Donnarumma, who captained Italy at San Siro, was booed by some fans as he entered the field for Italy’s second game at the Stadio Meazza since he left Milan on a free transfer to join Paris Saint-Germain.
Vicario, who some supporters wanted to see replace Donnarumma in goal, posted a message of support for his national teammate on Instagram the morning after the game.
Vicario wrote, “The boos are loud enough when you are away, let alone when you are at home. You’ve been great, Donnarumma. Forza Azzurri.”
Davide Frattesi, an Inter midfielder, scored twice in the first half, leading Italy to a 2-1 victory. A few minutes before halftime, Andriy Yarmelenko scored an equalizer for the visitors.
The Azzurri now have seven points after four games, good for second place in qualification. Italy is now in second place in the group, six points behind England despite having played one less game.
