Inter Milan’s Serie A season hasn’t gotten off to the best of starts, but on Saturday, they picked up three much-needed points away at Sassuolo.

After some strong work from Denzel Dumfries, Edin Dzeko gave them the lead on the cusp of halftime. When Davide Frattesi scored, Simone Inzaghi’s team appeared destined to lose, but Dzeko added a second to seal the victory.

Inter Milan defeated Sassuolo 2-1 at the MAPEI Stadium to earn their first league victory since mid-September, moving them up to seventh place in the Serie A standings. The Nerazzurri entered the match having suffered two straight league losses and having lost to Sassuolo the previous time the two teams met.

Inter took the lead just before halftime following a scrappy first half in which neither team created many clear-cut opportunities. Edin Dzeko scored his 100th Serie A goal by beating Sassuolo goalkeeper Andrea Consigli with a low volley from inside the six-yard box.

The Neroverdi took the lead to start the second half, but Alessio Donisi’s team leveled the score in the 60th minute. Davide Frattesi skillfully finished Rogerio’s cross on the volley from the left flank.

But after 15 minutes, the visitors scored the game’s decisive goal when Edin Dzeko headed Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s cross past Consigli for his second goal of the match and a crucial victory for Simone Inzaghi’s team.

This victory will mean the world to Inzaghi, who is under extreme pressure to turn things around at Inter after the team’s worst league start in 11 years. The Nerazzurri will believe that even though they weren’t at their best today, their quality still shone through and the victory was well-earned, despite the fact that it was a battle.

At the start of the day, Inter and Sassuolo were tied for third place in the points standings with eight points separating them from Napoli at the top. The visitors knew it would be a difficult test against a team that has kept a total of five clean sheets in the league this season coming into the game after consecutive losses to both Udinese and Roma.

Although Frattesi’s outstanding goal for the Neroverdi tied it up for Inter, Inzaghi’s team persisted, and Dzeko secured his brace to return the points to the Giuseppe Meazza.

Inter manages to pull off back-to-back victories in the span of a few days, easing the mounting pressure on their coach’s shoulders despite the fact that it was hardly convincing. They relied on the legendary Dzeko to score two poacher’s goals in a lackluster performance from the visitors, and that was ultimately enough to put an energetic Sassuolo team’s challenge to rest. Although they were the superior team for large portions of the game, the Neroverdi were unable to earn their third consecutive victory.
